The 80/20 distribution is the empirical finding of Norwegian sport scientist Stephen Seiler, who spent two decades analysing training logs of world-class endurance athletes across running, rowing, cross-country skiing and cycling. Across sports and eras, elite endurance athletes converge on the same pattern: roughly 80% of sessions performed below the first lactate threshold (~Zone 1–2), and roughly 20% performed above the second lactate threshold (~Zone 4–5). The middle intensity — sustained "moderately hard" tempo — is deliberately minimised.

Total: ~5.5 h. Low-intensity time: ~4.5 h (~82%). High-intensity work time: ~55 min (~17%). Middle-zone tempo: near zero. That is what a polarized week looks like in practice.
Pure low-intensity training builds aerobic capacity but leaves lactate tolerance and VO₂max under-developed. Pure high-intensity training raises VO₂max quickly but crashes into fatigue and injury within weeks. The 80/20 split preserves adaptation from both stimuli while keeping systemic stress low enough to sustain year-round.
Sessions held at Zone 3 (roughly 75–85% HRmax, RPE 6–7 out of 10) feel productive but sit above the first lactate threshold and below the second. Athletes accumulate cardiovascular and neuromuscular stress comparable to a hard session while under-loading the specific adaptations of true threshold or true easy work. Seiler calls this the "black hole" of endurance training. If most of your sessions leave you tired but never truly hard or truly easy, you are living in it.

No formula is universally “correct.” The only way to know your true HRmax is a supervised maximum-effort test.
Zone estimates from age-based formulas carry ±10 bpm uncertainty, because HRmax varies substantially between individuals of the same age. Medication that affects heart rate (for example beta-blockers) makes percentage-of-HRmax targets unreliable.
