About SnapHeartRateZones
Free, science-based heart rate zone calculators for smarter cardiovascular training
Our Mission
SnapHeartRateZones was created to provide free, accessible, and accurate heart rate zone calculators for athletes, fitness enthusiasts, coaches, and anyone interested in optimizing their cardiovascular training. We believe that understanding your heart rate zones is fundamental to effective exercise programming.
Our goal is to demystify heart rate training by offering easy-to-use tools backed by established scientific formulas, while providing clear educational content to help you apply this knowledge effectively.
What We Offer
Heart Rate Zone Calculator
Calculate all five training zones with gender-specific formulas (Tanaka for men, Gulati for women). Includes a visual zone graph, formula comparison, and instant sharing options.
Maximum Heart Rate Calculator
Compare validated formulas side-by-side: Tanaka (208-0.7×age) for men, Gulati (206-0.88×age) for women, and Fox (220-age) as a historical reference.
Fat Burning Zone Guide
Understand Zone 2 training with gender-specific calculations and visual BPM range displays. Includes research on fat oxidation differences between men and women.
Cardio Peak Zones
Learn about high-intensity zones (4 and 5) and how to incorporate threshold and VO2max training into your program.

The Formulas We Use
Our calculators implement established formulas that have been validated through decades of exercise physiology research. We offer gender-specific calculations for improved accuracy:
- •Fox Formula (220 - age): The most widely recognized formula. It is usually traced to Fox, Naughton & Haskell (1971), where it appeared as a convenient approximation rather than as a validated regression. We show it as a historical reference only — it overestimates HRmax for many active adults.
- •Gulati Formula (206 - 0.88 × age): Developed in 2010 from a study of 5,437 women, this formula provides more accurate estimates for female athletes and is our default for female users.
- •Tanaka Formula (208 - 0.7 × age): Published in 2001, this formula was derived from meta-analysis of 351 studies involving 18,712 subjects, providing improved accuracy especially for older adults.
- •Karvonen Formula: Also known as the Heart Rate Reserve (HRR) method, this formula incorporates resting heart rate for more personalized zone calculations that account for individual fitness levels.
Understanding the Five Zones
The five-zone model is based on physiological thresholds and metabolic responses to exercise intensity:
