The %HRmax targets are the same across sports, but the actual bpm you observe will differ. Test your sport-specific HRmax with a hard effort in that discipline for the most accurate zones.
The intensity concept is identical — easy aerobic effort where you can hold a full conversation — but the bpm may be slightly lower for rowing than for running at the same perceived effort.
Every 4–6 weeks. As fitness improves, your HR at a given pace drops. If you are training consistently and your Zone 2 pace feels too easy, retest your HRmax and update your zones.
Use watts (split) for pacing and HR for verification. Watts respond instantly to effort; HR lags and drifts. Both together are ideal.
